THE LIBRARY
The
Library of the Rijeka State Archives is a specialized reference library
used by researchers and the staff. Books have been systematically
collected since 1926, i.e. from the inception of the archival services in
Rijeka. The Library has been professionally systematized since 1948. The
make up of the book collection is subordinate to functioning of the
Archives and it is a reference point for scientific research. The Library
collection comprises
5147 books and 384 periodicals; 9587 volumes in all. The books are
catalogued according to international standards ISBD (M) or ISBD (S) for
periodicals and are classified after the UDK classification. From the main
catalogue the alphabetical, local and specialized catalogues were made,
and a special catalogue for archival literature. Most of the books relate
to the general, national and local history, followed by the auxiliary
historical sciences and other social sciences. The oldest book kept in the
Library was printed in 1720, in Venice. Old newspapers published in Rijeka
are also deposited in the Library continually since 1873.
The 19th century books are of special interest, in particular
the official papers and collections of laws from the Austrian Empire and
Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. On the local level there are various
proceedings, electoral papers and other regulations issued by the public
authorities since 1844, then reports, statistics and other abstracts from
the field of economy, social services, education, public, political and
